9. Long-term development projects

ProDigest is also a preferred partner in long-term development projects aiming at developing new innovative products.

Typical endpoints of these projects are:

• Identification of active compounds or precursors: the ProDigest technology platform can be used to identify specific metabolites of bacterial origin that can be of special interest for application in foods or pharmaceuticals.
• Isolation of microorganisms for biotechnological applications: bacteria with specific metabolic activity may be isolated from different sources and used in industrial applications, such as probiotics.
• Development of production strategies: isolated bacteria may be used for the fermentative production of certain metabolites with specific biological activity. Not all microorganisms can directly be applied as probiotic. The use of their metabolic capacity to produce new active compounds may be an alternative application of some strains.
• Formulation development: the activity of a specific ingredient can be enhanced or decreased according to the specific delivery carrier, which is used. Therefore, selection of the optimal formulation is a key step to obtain the final desired effect (i.e. encapsulation, excipients…)
